In October of 2005 a ten year old boy fell to the disease of bat rabies. This was so uncommon that the boy visited his doctor and the ER once each and was discharged because the symptoms were not seemed to be life threatening. The disease took over the child and before his death he bit a fellow family member himself. As the process of the disease took him over in his final days he needed to be sedated to not cause further pain to himself or the others around him. This case was so rare that it took until after his death for the doctors to learn what had actually caused the disease. This was the first death in the state of Mississippi from bat rabies since 1956 and the only case in the United State that year. When the boy entered the hospital they checked in for bat bites but not one was found. In the later week examination of the boy it was apparent a bat bite, is what had caused the disease to enter the boy. At the boys home it was not uncommon for bats to be around the house. They had been found in the garage and there was a story about the boy removing a live bat from his bedroom. Also bats had been found dead on the outside of the home. He had also just returned from summer camp where he went out camping were bats had been seen. Professional Bat removal preformed by a bat pest control company may have prevented this from happening. While in many other states other animals are known to carry the disease of rabies in the state of Mississippi bats are the only known carrier of the disease. While bats are good for the environment Mississippi bat removal specialist know that it is important to be safe when removing bats from buildings and people’s homes. This death was a cold reminder of what can happen when you are not careful with dealing with bats. In the United States from 1980-2004 there was 35 cases of rabies detected from exposure to bat bites. Fortunately for Mississippi bat pest control and others who come in contact with bats rabies can be treated when it is known that a person was bitten by an animal. The treatment takes 2 weeks long and is 5 shots and can even been done on babies. Keep you and your family safe by calling a bat removal specialist if you happen to find bats in your home.
