One of Desert Wildlife Services specialties is in the humane pest control removal of bats occupying homes, porches and commercial structures and schools.

The bat is a unique flying mammal, generally doing us a service by removing multitudes of annoying nocturnal insects. For the most part, the bat performs their nightly duties, and then vanishes during the day, causing most homeowners no harm or property damage.

Arizona is home to approximately 28 bat removal species, but most do not occupy structures on a regular basis. Structural roosting bats in southern Arizona generally consist of the following species needing bat pest control:

Bat removal and bat pest control that is needed in or on structures, can be categorized in at least 5 ways:

  1. The night roosting bat. Night roosters are "taking a break" from their forging routine, and resting on walls, porch beams, and wherever the bat feels safe. This type of bat is not generally gaining access to the structure, but often leaves urine streaks down walls and beams, and bat guano (bat droppings) below their roost.
  2. The day roosting bat. Day roosters are often found in the same areas as the above mentioned night roosters, and the same urine streaking and guano accumulation will often occur. Day roosting bats should be treated with extra caution, as it is generally uncommon for bats to leave themselves exposed to sunlight, especially in open areas where they are vulnerable to attack by predators.
  3. Bat colonies. Colonies of bats in structures are generally not seen roosting on the exposed areas of homes, structures, walls, etc. Colonies will be found out of sight, tucked up between vertical gaps, and/or in attics, crawlspaces, in hollow block and other dark, secure places of the home or structure. Many people will hire a professional bat removal or bat pest control company to take care of this type of problem.
  4. Bats in the living quarters. Bats often find themselves inside homes, offices, warehouses, supermarkets and other unwanted, indoor facilities. Indoor bats are often the result of doors or windows being left open, although it is not uncommon for bats to find a way into a structure through duct systems and gaps between ceilings and walls.
  5. Bats on the ground. Most bat species do not prefer "roosting" on the ground. Assume bats on the ground, around or in your structure, are sick, potentially with the rabies virus.

Desert Wildlife Services can handle any of the above bat situations, by humane bat removal and bat pest control techniques. Desert Wildlife Services is a Bat Conservation International "Approved Bat Exclusion Professional," and Certified Wildlife Control Professional, through the National Wildlife Control Operators Association.
